!On the 1861 census it seems Catherine changed sex! she was entered as Cethran Allen son 2 Hemsby living with George and Rebbeca in Hemsby. On the 1871 census she was living with her grandparents Richard and Rebecca Dunham in Martham Road. Catherine Allen G.Dau. Scholar 11 Hemsby She was possibly just staying with them for a few days and got caught by the census, her brother Arthur was working there as a farm labourer at the time. In 1881 she was not living with her parents. She was about 21 by then and had married Walter Dew Pettingill. She had five children. One of these children was called Dora, the youngest, she was the mother of Beryl Rogers who has been so helpful to me regarding the Allen Tree. Needless to say Catherine Allen's family history has been well documented by Beryl. A quote from Catherine via Beryl referring to her grandfather John Crask Webb "He was not a man to be proud of". Beryl also tells me: Catherine's eldest but one daughter Eva died when Walter was born so Catherine went to live with the children and their father and brought them up. Walter and Catherine, his sister (surname Harley) are still alive (1992) Walter is 85 and Cathy is 87, sadly she can no longer walk and is in a home Brother and sister never married, always living together until about two years ago. It is from them that Beryl*has managed to get so much information. Cathy can remember Rebbeca having met her when a child and she used to tell them stories of the Allens. Catherine's children were: IDA = Ralph Edmunds Children: Ida May and John EVA ELIZA = Bert Harvey Children: Cathy and Walter DORA 1886-1972 = Archie Edwards: Children Noel Pettingill Edwards (1911) (Noel married Ada Williams and had one child Nadine) Maycel Vera Edwards(1913) (Maycel married John Beecher who had two children,Elizabeth who married Ronald Oram and had two sons and Heather = ? and had two sons)Beryl*Pamela Edwards(1921 = John Rogers Children:D'Alvery Vaughan (1949)(who married Moyra Shaw and had six children,Emma(d) Kate 1974,Peter 1976 Mathew 1979) and Nicola Pamela (1952) = Geoffrey Barker and had one child Lucy 1974. Was Cethran son 2 in 1861 the Catherine G/dau Scholar 11 in 1871? From two independent family trees, one from Linda Bourne and one from Bernard Allen a Catherine Allen was born (Linda) 1859 and (Bernard)1860 so I think it is safe to assume Cethran was Catherine. On both trees Arthur is listed as being born in 1859 I think that this should be 1855,all the census entries point to this, unless of course anyone has a birth certificate.I will check it in the births. If he was born in 1855 then see notes regarding Arthur G.W.Allen no.109. From a visit to The Society of Genealogists I came up with: 1885-6 Eastern Division of Norfolk.Ormesby Polling District (District M) Parish of Hemsby,Ownership Voters. No. M 583 Allen George John Hemsby Copyhold cottages and land. Next the churchyard and the common. Will in hand. Clifford Allen and Walter Dow Pettingill were appointed executors. He gave all his real estate(except copyhold hereditaments)and all personal estate and effects whatsoever to the Trustees. The copyhold property to the use of such persons as the Trustees within 21 years of his decease think fit. The Trustees should sell and convert onto money the real and personal estate and divide among all the children in equal shares. If any of the children died before him then that childs share would go to their children. The Will was signed in 1901, ten years before he died. It was a bit more complicated than that but this is the gist. His wife was not mentioned. Part of a letter written by Auntie Chloe in the same month as her death October 1992, tells me: My grandmother and grandfather parted up and grandmother lived in a little cottage next door to dad's house(Clifford Allen PFD) grandad went to Thorp for treatment he died there. Framlingham,Framingham,Fremingham and now Trimingham but could have been Frimingham as the writing was not good. The only thing I can say for Trimingham is that at least it exits which is more than I can say for the others. According to my Phillimore there is a Felmingham which borders on North Walsham and a Trimingham which is near Cromer and Framlington Earl and Framlington Pigot which are not far from Caxton where Rebecca's father was born so which do I go for? All of them I suppose until I find her.

On the 1891 census of Great Yarmouth I found: 4, Caistor Road Walter Benns Head M 45 Lab Stokesby Ann Wife M 53 do Mary Golder Niece S 15 Machiness Stokesby Albert Allen G/Son 3 Yarmouth Nfk. I am sure that the above relates to Alice Elizasfamily and that Albert is her son. This means she could have been born at Stokesby, perhaps there are parish records which could tell me her d.o.b. There is no Alice Eliza Benns birth registration between 1866 and 1870 unless I have missed it. WRONG this is not my Alice at least I don't think so. If her father was born in Stokesby then it isn't. I have got to do some sorting out here! I have assumed that Walter Benns above was father of Alice Eliza, mainly because of the existence of Albert Allen, grandson on the census.Could this be a coincidence? Albert Sidney Allen was born in 1887 which means he could have been about 3 on 1891 census. Obvious what I must do is look on the 1891 Hemsby census and see if little Albert Sidney is at home, that should settle it! RIGHT! Have looked at 1891 census for Hemsby: Fiche 1505 Waters Lane,Hemsby Albert Allen Head M 24 Butcher Hemsby Alice E. do Wife M 21 Stokesby Frederick G Allen son 2 Hemsby Alice S.Nicholls servant 22 Gents servant domestic Hemsby So it seems that my Alice Benns, Lingwood certificate is not the right one or the marriage between Walter Benns and Emma Harriet Battley. She appointed Walter Dew Pettingill her son in law and Clifford Allen the executors of the Will. The Will was signed in 1884, she was only 48 years old then and didn't die until 1919. Her husbands Will didn't mention her but this was not signed until 1901 ten years before he died. The gist of the Will was: All the dwelling houses and land situated at Hemsby given to her by her father and all other real estate was given to Walter Pettingill and Clifford Allen upon trust to allow her father Richard Dunham to receive the rents and income during his life(he was about 71 then). After his death to sell the said property by public auction or private contract and the proceeds to be shared equally between all the children or grandchildren of deceased children. Then there was a codicil in 1885: Any child or grandchild who she made an advance to throughout her lifetime shall pay the amount into her executors before any division takes place. (in other words they only got the same amount whatever happened) Then there was another codicil 1905. This was because Walter Pettingill had died and so she then appointed her son John Webb Allen to be the other executor.Probate was granted 16th Oct.1919 at Norwich.

Will in hand.He left everything to Mary Ann Webb his illegitimate daughter(who also never married and lived with him throughout his life) Bernard Allen has a sale catalogue of Stalham Hall. Death certificate in hand. He died on 30th November 1865 at Stalham. He was 77 years old and his occupation was given as Yeoman. His cause of death was Decay of nature (old age) Informant wasM.W.Sandford present at the death Cromer. The death was registered one month after death on 30th December 1865 Will. Webb 10th April 1866 Effects under 1500. The Will of John Craske Webb late of Stalham Hall,Stalham in the County of Norfolk Esquire Deceased who died 30th November 1865 at Stalham Hall Aforsaid was proved at Norwich by the oath of Mary Anne Georgiana Webb of Stalham Hall aforesaid spinster the sole executor. Mary Anne Georgiana Webb was born March 1816(Linda Bourne) Worstead and buried Stalham 16 Feb.1894(LB) her mother was Mary Keeler(LB) Beryl Rogers: "JohnCrask Webb was adopted by a spinster daughter of a doctor who lived at Stalham Hall, he came from a poor family and ended up Squire and Lord of the Manor, quoting my Grandmother who may have known him as a child(Catherine Allen who married Walter Dew-Pettingill)"he was not a man to be proud of". He firstly had adaughter Mary-Ann Georgiana Webb daughter of a Mary Keeler, born Worsted May 26th 1816, she went to live with him at the hall, she never married either, and is buried with her father in Stalham churchyard. I did find the grave but the name is getting very hard to decipher." Beryl also says that there is a book "The Story of Stalham Hall" but nobody has tracked down a copy in recent years. (NB.PFD write NGS) My letter to N.+ N.G.S. has resulted in a letter from a Mr.Peter Cooke who although he does not have the book I am searching for it seems that he knows the Hall very well,he lives in Stalham, and could probably give me details of it's history. I have written back to him and sent a printout of the details regarding John Craske Webb.

!George is on the 1871 and 1881 census living in North Street Hemsby with his mother and father. He married Charlotte Emma Sear 13.8.1883 and had two children Ada Catherine and William. Ada Catherine married Henry James Bourne 25th June 1911. They had the following family: George b. 1912 -13 Harold Charles 1915-1976 = Phyllis Wiggins *** Henry James 1917=Peg Perrett Hilda Joan 1921 = George Woodard George E. 1923 - 35 Stanley Victor 1924 - 26 Reginald Arthur 1928 = Mary William J. 1928 - 29 Arthur William 1931 = Kathleen Joyce Arthur William and Kathleen Joyce Bourne had two children: Linda Patricia and Stephen John. Linda Bourne is the source of my information regarding George Webb Allen. Linda married the son of Harold Charles*** Terence, her first cousin and they have two children Emma 1987 and Michael 1988. Lindas' forte must be relationships because she has worked out: "Martin is my Dad's (Arthur Bourne) 2nd cousin, your sons are my third cousins!" From the list that Beryl sent me there is no mention of a baptism of George Webb Allen, perhaps as they had just baptised 7 children in 1865 they decided to give poor old George a miss as he was born in 1866 or thereabouts. There was a George baptised in on February 10th 1865 but he was buried aged 18 months on Feb.26th 1865.

!Don't know much about this one. On the family tree sent by Linda Bourne it gives his birth as 1857. Beryl Rogers has an odd listing of his baptism. It was simply listed as: June 25th 1865 John to Rebecca Allen, no mention of father George John. I think I will get the birth certificate when I am in London next time to see just what was what.
