!Mary Ann Tennant was the first to sign Tuttle(Tuthill) and so it stayed Her first son was illegitimate,John Howard Tennant, son of a John Howard. From the 1851 census Southburgh,Norfolk: (Bap 31.3.1844) Edward Copland Head Mar 39 Ag.Lab Norf.Southburgh Flipside Harriet Wife Mar 53 Gressenhall page 14 (I think these ages are incorrect see further census details) Ann Tuttle DaughterMar 29 Pauper Ag.Lab whos husband has left her Gresenhall John Tennant Son 7 Pauper Southburgh James Tuttle Son 5 Pauper Southburgh Rightside Edward Tuttle Son 8 mths Pauper Southburgh. page 15 I telephoned Ros regarding the above. Shehad been having some trouble finding which was our Mary Ann Tennant as there were a lot of them, the original idea being that she was born at Longham in 1826/1827. The census is also misleading as it was on two pages making Ann look as though she was the head. From the above it seems that Harriet was her mother and they both came from Gresenhall, mother at some stage married Edward Copland. This made Ann born about 1822 in Gressenhall. I telephoned Ros regarding this and she tells me there was a baptism of a Maria Tennant in Gressenhall in 1822,mother Harriet Tennant, reputed father Thomas Hastings.B.Transcripts (Ros) Also in Gressenhall records: James Tennant married Susan Mowton on 10th October 1797. There were two children Mary Tennant bap. 1798 and Harriet 15th January 1802. Could this be the mother of Mary Ann Tennant and the grandmother and grandfather? The date 1802 is right. Harriet should have been entered on the 1851 census as about 49 I think therewas a muddle here because: 1841 census,Norfolk Southburgh Edward Copland 39 Harriet Copland 39 James son 8 Richard Copland 78 Father. 1861 census Norfolk Shipdham Hingham Road,Southburgh Ann Tuttle Head 39 work on land (Husband left) Gressenhall James son 15 Work on land Southburgh Edward son 11 Southburgh Georgiana dau 8 Scholar Wicklewood Union Harriet dau 4 Scholar Hingham Sarah dau 14 weeks Southburgh 1871 Census Norfolk,Southburgh Church Road.Southburgh Edward Copland Head Widow 69 ag.lab. !John Tuthill.I have done no research on this. Once again it has been done by Rosamund Herring. It was only in 1990 she discovered where he died. It was his wife Mary Ann who first wrote the name as Tuttle, and it has been so ever since. My research: Southburgh On 1851 census he was not there. Ann Tuttle 29 whos husband has left her. On 1861 census he was not there Ann Tuttle 39 Husband left I'm not sure just how many of these children belonged to John but it does seem a very odd sort of family life! Between 1851 and 1861 he was not there at least not all the time. He managed to have twochildren during that time, at least that was the name on the certificate,on Harriets birth certificate in 1856 there was no father mentioned and mother was Ann Tuttle, but on Harriets marriage certificate she names John as her father. George Henry who was born in 1864 names his father as Henry Tuttle on his marriage certificate in 1894. Sarah Ann Eliza was never registered but was born about 1860. She was baptised twice, once in 1861 simply as "daughter of Ann Tuttle" and again on 30 .8.1863 "Daughter of John and Ann Tuttle" Southburgh. So probably John came home for a while then, sven months after that baptism George Henry was born. John Died in 1875 in Lambeth 48 years old of heart disease, dropsy. Death cert. was signed by Thomas Corkery, brother in law present at death,2,Charlotte Terrace Lilford Street. John Died at 12 Lilford Street,Cold Harbour Lane. He was buried in the Lambeth Cemetery no.653 1861 Census Lambeth(from Ros): 2,Charlotte Street Thomas Corkery Head mar 28 Market Gardener Ireland Newtown Susannah Wife Mar 30 Norfolk ? Timothy Corkery son 1 Surrey,Camberwell Rufus was the illegitimate child of Susannah. I have all the deaths of the Tuttles up to 1926 and there is not one listed for a Rufus Tuttle. 1926 would have made him 82 so I suppose it is possible that he lived after that. Could he have returned to Ireland? I will get the 1871 census of Lambeth and see if they were still there. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Telecom Sept.1995 Ros Herring In Wymondham Police book 1858 an entry ( don't know what for) he was 5' 7" tall and could not read or write.
